While the movie is a mess, Aaliyah’s portrayal as vampire queen Akasha is incredible. In her final movie role before her tragic death, she commands the screen every time she appears. Akasha is the first vampire who is awoken by Lestat’s music, with the undead monster now a rock star in modern times.
The film itself is let down by a poor script and cheap production. One reviewer on Rotton Tomatoes called it “a muddled and campy MTV-styled vampire movie with lots of eye candy and bad accents.” Ouch.
The one shining light is Aaliyah, who demonstrates her star power with a captivating performance that hints at a talent we never got to fully unearth.
11. David (The Lost Boys)
When you think of 80s cult classics, The Lost Boys is usually one of the first movies that come to mind. It’s a film of its time, with a cast of up-and-comers (Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, and Alex Winter) who would go on to do great things, an excellent soundtrack, and a tight script that balances horror with laughs.
The general plot concerns a family who moves to a small coastal town that just so happens to be a haven for a colony of vampires. Oldest son Patric is bitten and spends the rest of the film trying to fight his bloodlust while his younger (Haim) brother and new friend Edgar Frog (Feldman) plot to take down the vampires causing all the mayhem.
Of all the vampires in the flick, Sutherland’s David is the most menacing. Always wearing black with bleached blonde hair, he follows in the footsteps of the great vampires before him who only want to feast on humans and embrace their bloodlust. He’s an evil son of a bitch you wouldn’t want to run into while walking down a dark alley and is masterfully played by a young Sutherland.
12. Morbius (Marvel Comics)

Forget the big-budget Jared Leto take on this Marvel character and get stuck into the comic book version. Michael Morbius is a famous scientist who contracts a deadly blood disease. In trying to find a cure he mutates into a vampire who must survive by drinking blood. Throughout his run in the comics, Morbius has been portrayed as a hero and villain and is now considered an anti-hero.
He has managed to control his urges with medication at different times, often thanks to help from Spider-Man, who was originally his enemy. What makes Morbius such a compelling character is the heartache he’s been through. Plus, you never really know if he’s going to help the good guys or go rogue and look out for his own interests.
