In 1971, comedian Lily Tomlin was impressed by the work of writer Jane Wagner. Tomlin asked Wagner to collaborate on her upcoming comedy special, And That’s The Truth. Soon, romance blossomed and they fell madly in love. Since Tomlin and Wagner didn’t formally come out as a couple, it didn’t make headlines in the 70s. For the most part, writers would refer to Wagner as Tomlin’s collaborator.

After 42 years together, Tomlin and Wagner married in 2013. Additionally, Wagner and Tomlin often work together. In 1985, Wagner wrote the critically acclaimed one-woman show The Search for Signs of Intelligence Life in the Universe, starring Tomlin. 

3. Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allyne

Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allyne have an intriguing Hollywood love story. After releasing the comedy special Live, Tig’s career took off. Featuring her deadpan style of comedy, Tig discussed her cancer diagnosis in the special. That led to Tig landing a role in the 2013 movie In a World.

During filming, Tig and actress Stephanie Allynne fell in love. Allynne had never dated a woman at the time, but they quickly formed a close bond. They married in 2015 and had twins via surrogate in 2016. 

4. Wanda Sykes and Alex Niedbalski

Stand-up comedian Wanda Sykes had her big break as a writer on the critically acclaimed Chris Rock Show. Later, she gained widespread praise for her roles in Curb Your Enthusiasm and Black-Ish. She currently stars in The Upshaws and The Good Fight. Aside from her career, Sykes is a proud supporter of the LGBTQ community. Sykes famously came out as a lesbian in 2008 during a same-sex marriage rally in Las Vegas.

Initially, Sykes kept her personal life private but eventually shared her story to help others. Sykes came out to her parents at the age of 40 after meeting French-born Alex Niedbalski. However, her conservative parents didn’t support her decision and chose not to attend their wedding. Later, Sykes and her parents reconciled. Furthermore, Sykes and Niedbalski had fraternal twins Olivia and Lucas in 2009.

5. Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird

Dominating the NWSL and WNBA respectively, Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird are two of the most successful female athletes. As a couple they’re highly influential as they break down barriers. Bird spent her entire career playing for the Seattle Storm, winning four WNBA Championships and five Olympic Gold medals with the United States national team.

Not to be outdone, Rapinoe’s the captain for OL Reigns and the women’s national team. She led the team to a Gold medal at the London Olympics and two FIFA World Cups.

They’ve also made history together as well. In 2018, they became the first same-sex couple to appear on the cover of ESPN’s The Body Issue. The famous couple announced their engagement in 2020.

6. Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor

Few couples compare with Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor. The Emmy Award winner Taylor is best known for her roles in The Practice and Two and a Half-Men. Her much younger girlfriend, Paulson, became a household name with her roles in American Horror Story and her Emmy Award-winning performance in The People v O.J. Simpson.

With a 32 age difference, they remain one of the most influential couples in Hollywood.

7. Jodie Foster and Alexandra Hedison

In 2013, Jodie Foster came out at the 70th Golden Globe Awards while accepting the Cecil B. Demille Award. While the Hollywood legend delivered a cryptic speech, her message was clear. Often considered one of the greatest actresses, Foster won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her roles in The Accused and The Silence of the Lambs. Furthermore, she starred in several classic movies, including Taxi Driver, Panic Room, and Inside Man.

Photographer Alexandra Hedison didn’t win an Oscar but she’s no slouch. Hedison created several highly successful art exhibitions and appeared in episodes of The L Word. Foster and Hedison dated for a year before marrying in 2014.

8. Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli

The critically acclaimed Netflix series Orange is the New Black followed the lives of inmates in a minimum security prison. However, the series also played a role in bringing together actress Samira Wiley and writer Lauren Morelli. Wiley had her career break as Poussey Washington in the series. She quickly became a significant star, going on to land a prominent role in The Handmaid’s Tale.

While working on Orange is the New Black, Wiley met Morelli, a writer on the show. Wiley and the former dancer felt an instant connection. The couple married in 2017, with their son born in 2021.

Kristen Stewart is one of the most influential Hollywood celebrities. Since her career as a child star, she’s constantly made headlines. She became a household name with her breakout performance in the Twilight Saga, but it’s Stewart’s relationships and personal life that garner more attention.

In 2017, Stewart came out as bisexual and openly dated men and women. Recently she began dating screenwriter Dylan Myer. They’re one of the most influential couples in the industry. Despite being one of the newer couples, Stewart and Meyer make headlines everywhere they go. 

10. Melissa Etheridge and Linda Wallem

Since debuting in the late 80s, Melissa Etheridge has been a top-selling musician. She won several Grammy Awards for her work and had huge hits with the songs “Ain’t It Heavy” and “Come to my Window.” Etheridge first came out in the early 90s and openly dated several women.

She dated Julie Cypher, with whom she had a child using artificial insemination. She would go on to date Tammy Lynn Michale, with the two having twins using an anonymous sperm donor. In 2014, Etheridge settled down with the co-creator of Nurse Jackie Linda Wallem. 

11. Rachel Maddow and Susan Mikula

MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow and photographer Susan Mikula fell in love at first sight after they began working with each other in the 90s. Mikula rose to fame in the art world with several high-profile exhibitions, although she didn’t get her first solo show until 1998. One year later, Mikula hired Maddow to work in her yard.

At the time, Maddow was working on her doctoral dissertation. They soon went on a date and have been together ever since. Maddow went on to become the first openly lesbian primetime news anchor and host of The Rachel Maddow Show. Mikula and Maddow are one of the most influential couples in Hollywood.

12. Dorothy Louise “Del” Martin and Phyllis Lyon

Dorothy Louise “Del” Maring and Phyllis Lyon are one of the most important lesbian couples in history. Martin and Lyon met in the early 50s while working for the same Seattle magazine. By Valentine’s Day 1953, they had moved in together in an apartment on historic Castro Street in San Francisco.

Together they formed the first lesbian political and civil rights group, Daughters of Bilitis. They also both acted as editors for The Ladder newspaper. They remained influential gay activists for the remainder of their lives. They initially married in 2004, but the state voided the marriage. Finally, they officially married in August 2008. Sadly, Martin died two months later.

13. Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger

No two athletes are on the same level as former soccer player Ashlyn Harris and Gotham FC star Ali Krieger. They both made a name for themselves as NJ/NY Gotham FC members. Furthermore, they’re significant stars on the United States women’s national team, winning several FIFA Women’s World Cups.

Harris and Krieger began dating in 2010 while playing for Gotham FC. After marrying in Miami in 2019, they adopted a daughter in 2021 and a son one year later.

14. Ariana DeBose and Sue Makkoo

Actress Ariana DeBose met costume designer Sue Makkoo while working together on the broadway show Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. DeBose quickly became one of Hollywood’s biggest stars with her roles in several plays, such as Hamilton, Bring It On: The Musical, and A Bronx’s Tale.

Later, she stole the show in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. With Makko by her side, DeBose made history as the first queer woman of color to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars.

Adelaide Kane is a rising star in Hollywood, while model Marthe Woertman is a major TikTok star. They’re one of the most talked about lesbian couples to get together in recent years.

Kane is best known for roles in Neighbors, Reign, and Teen Wolf. Her girlfriend, Woertman, has made a significant impact on social media and the modeling world. In 2021, Kane revealed she was bisexual and later began dating Woertman. They’re easily one of the most influential lesbian couples today.

16. Robin Roberts and Amber Laign

It’s common for world-famous Hollywood stars to date ordinary people with regular jobs. There isn’t a sports fan in the world that doesn’t know Robin Roberts. Undoubtedly, Roberts is one of her generation’s most influential sportscasters and news anchors.

She began her career with ESPN in the 90s before joining The Today Show in 2005. While Roberts’s family and friends knew about her same-sex relationships, she didn’t come out publicly until 2013, although she and Amber Laign have been together since 2005. They’re one of the most beloved lesbian couples in America. 

17. Maria Bello and Dominique Crenn

With a long and illustrious career, Maria Bello is one of the greatest actresses never to win an Oscar. She has has memorable roles in Coyote Ugly, History of Violence, and as Dr. Anna Del Amico in ER. Her better half is one of the most famous chefs in the world, Dominique Crenn.

Crenn is the first female chef to earn three Michelin stars for her restaurant Atelier Crenn. Crenn and Bello first appeared as a couple at the 92nd Academy Awards and announced they were engaged. They remain a highly influential lesbian couple. 

18. Raven-Symone and Mirada Maday

It’s not uncommon for Hollywood stars to marry people with ordinary jobs. Indeed, they often have long-lasting relationships. Raven-Symone and Mirada Maday are already a beloved couple. Raven is one of the most famous child stars best known for her role as Olivia Coleman in The Cosby Show.

She went on to star in the Disney series That’s So Raven. She cemented her legacy on the ABC series The View. Since coming out, Raven had been in a few open relationships with women. Eventually, she began dating social media manager Mirada Maday and they got married in 2020.
