Seven-time Grammy Award-winning artist John Mayer has designed himself his very own watch with the help of both HODINKEE and Casio G-Shock. Inspired by the Casiotone SK-5 sampling keyboard used by Mayer back in his youth, the G-SHOCK Ref 6900 is a 90s classic with an 80s twist that positions Mayer’s musical education as the catalyst for this brand new timepiece. First launched in 1995, the 6900 is one of the most iconic Casio G-SHOCK timepieces still in production. Putting G-SHOCK on the map of fashion streetwear aficionados, the last 25-years have seen this incredible watch take center stage amongst the very best. Positioned at the intersection of culture and creativity and garnering positive reception across demographics, John Mayer attempts to add to the legacy of the 6900.
Wanting to establish a sense of authenticity, all parties involved wanted to create something with a purpose. Not just another throwaway collaboration to be forgotten, Mayer stays true to his own relationship with Casio products. With the Casiotone SK-5 acting as the perfect bridge between him as a musician and a watch enthusiast, G-SHOCK, HODINKEE, and Mayer have created just that.
“When Casio approached me about the possibility of working together on a G-SHOCK, it actually timed out really well, said John Mayer. “I had already been pretty deep into wearing the ‘Mudmaster’ models, and something felt cosmically right about a G-SHOCK being the first watch collab I’ve ever done.
Casio keyboards came to mind as much as the watches did. Then I remembered how important the Casiotone SK-5 was in my life, and it got exciting really fast. It’s the perfect bridge between my double life as a musician and watch enthusiast.” Bringing out all the usual aesthetics associated with the 1980s, the G-SHOCK Ref 6900 by John Mayer takes on the coloration of the Casiotone SK-5. Sporting a textured slate gray tone for both the case and strap, a teal “G-SHOCK” at 12 o’clock, and yellow lettering around the bezel, it’s modern reliability with a nostalgic 80s aesthetic.
